Proverbs 23:23 is a powerful verse that encourages us to value truth above all else. It says, “Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.”
The word “buy” in this verse can be interpreted in two ways. First, it can mean to acquire something through payment. In this sense, the verse is telling us to invest in truth. We should be willing to pay the price to learn the truth.
Second, the word “buy” can also mean to choose or to prefer. In this sense, the verse is telling us to value truth above all else. We should choose truth over lies, even if it is difficult. We should prefer truth over comfort.
The truth is important for many reasons. First, it is the foundation of knowledge. Without truth, we cannot know anything for sure. Second, the truth is essential for wisdom. Wisdom is the ability to use knowledge to make good decisions. Without truth, we cannot make wise decisions. Third, the truth is the key to a good life. A life based on truth is a life that is free from deception and regret.
In today’s world, it is more important than ever to value truth. We are constantly bombarded with lies and misinformation. It is easy to be misled if we are not careful. That is why it is so important to invest in truth. We should seek out the truth, even when it is difficult to find. We should choose the truth, even when it is not popular. And we should prefer the truth, even when it is not convenient.
What is the truth?
John 17:17: “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.”
John 14:6: “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
Ask God for His Holy Spirit to reveal the truth to you.
Psalm 119:18: “Open thou mine eyes, That I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.”
Ephesians 1:17–18: “That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,”
If we value truth, we will be wise and we will live good lives. We will be able to make good decisions and we will be free from deception and regret. So let us all commit to valuing truth. Let us buy the truth, and sell it not.
