The Power of Remembrance, Part 1

Scripture frequently calls us to remember. This isn’t just about recalling facts, but about keeping vital truths at the forefront of our minds because we often forget what truly matters and focus on the trivial. Let’s explore some key areas we are encouraged to remember:

Reflect on Your Journey: Remember your past victories and times of faithful service to the Lord. If you feel you’ve drifted, recall that earlier devotion and strive to return. Revelation 2:5 urges us to “Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works”.

Embrace the Resurrection: Never forget the power of Christ’s Resurrection. 2 Timothy 2:8 declares, “Remember that Jesus Christ…was raised from the dead”. We serve a living Savior whose power over death extends to the challenges we face.

Contemplate the Cross: Always remember the pain of the Cross. The Lord’s Supper itself is a command: “This do in remembrance of me” (Luke 22:19, 1 Corinthians 11:24)…. Reflecting on this ultimate sacrifice provides perspective, softens our hearts, and reminds us of Christ’s understanding of suffering.

Heed God’s Word: It’s vital to remember the preaching of Christ and His Word. Acts 20:31, 35 encourages us to “watch, and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive”. Putting these teachings into practice is key.

Live by God’s Principles: We should also remember the principles of God’s Word. John 15:20 reminds us, “Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord”. These principles offer guidance in our daily lives.

Learn from Consequences: Remember the punishment of others. Observing the outcomes of disobedience can serve as a powerful reminder…. We are told to “Remember Lot’s wife” (Luke 17:32).

Be Inspired by Faith: It’s encouraging to remember the patience and perseverance of other Christians. 1 Thessalonians 1:3 speaks of “Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labor of love, and patience of hope”. Their examples can strengthen our own walk.

Remembrance is a powerful thing. Meditate on these things this week and let them help you in your walk with Christ. Next week, I’ll have 6 more things the Bible tells us to “Remember”
